Doyle Conner, Longtime State Ag Commissioner, Dies at 83

In 1951, Doyle Conner, at age 21 and still a University of Florida Student, became the youngest person elected to the state House of Representatives.

By age 27, he was the youngest Speaker of the House.

Conner went on to serve 30 years as the State Agriculture Commissioner.

He is credited with modernizing the Department and adding Consumer Services to the mission. In a 2001 interview, Conner said public service brought him joy.

"And I think just seeing just any vital subject areas such as schools and prisons and those things, move in to another level is gratifying. Well you say you worked on it and it happened," said the former Agriculture Commissioner.

Conner died Sunday, one day short of his 84th birthday.
