Eglin Airman Killed During Training

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – An active-duty Airman, assigned to the 96th Test Wing, was killed during a accident October 11th. Major Garrett Knowlan, 32, died while participating in Air Force Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training at the Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla.

The training is operated by Detachment 2, 66th Training Squadron which conducts a water survival course for those aircrew members going to parachute-equipped airframes.

This course lasts four days and includes instruction in signaling rescue aircraft, hazardous aquatic life, food and water procurement, medical aspects of water survival and life raft procedures.

Major Knowlan was the executive officer for Brig. Gen. David Harris, 96th Test Wing commander. He was a 2002 graduate of the Air Force Academy and a 2010 graduate of the USAF Test Pilot School.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. Additional details will be provided as they become available.
