Congress Budget Cutters Going After F-35 and F-22 Stealth Jets

The pentagon is once again testing high tech weapons aircraft. Critics say they the fighter jets aren't worth the price tag and are they’re hoping to scrap them.

So what does that mean for the future of the F-22 and the F-35? They are the most expensive weapons program ever, says the Pentagon... $384 billion dollars earmarked for some 3,000 F-35 stealth fighter jets. Testing is resuming after a two week halt when electrical problems emerged.

Then there's the F-22 Air Force stealth fighter--at more than $140 million per plane. The nearly 200 plane fleet has been grounded since May after oxygen to the pilots kept cutting off. One pilot died.

There’s a half trillion dollar price tag for both aircraft.

Andrew Krepinevich of Stategic & Budgetary Assessment says “The question is are you really getting the kind of combat capability that justifies that cost?

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, back on June 9th, told a Senate committee, “We cannot afford aircraft that double and triple the original estimated costs.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, also back in that June 9th committee issued a warning. “I think we have to watch it very carefully.”

The F-22 has never been in combat. The F-35 may go the same way. Both planes have serious limitations.

These aircraft are relatively short range, which means they have to be based fairly close to the area of conflict.

What we've seen in recent years is countries like China, countries like Iran building ballistic missile forces than can easily target the forward air bases.

Winslow Wheeler, a Pentagon spending critic says the planes are too expensive and not stealthy enough. “Against some radars it's detectable as soon as it comes over the radar horizon and some of the radars that are best at doing that are quite antiquated technology from the Soviets."

The future of the F-35 will be in the hands of congress when lawmakers deliberate budget cuts this fall.

It is so amazing to me how ignorant some of the people are that post on here about our military here in Bay County . They are completely oblivious as to how critically important the military is and how much they contribute to our community financially , in employment opportunities and just the pride of having our wonderful military folks in our communities . The ones that are so quick to say take away funding from the military because we do`nt need high tech jets and weapons systems the old F-15 and F-16 are all we need are foolish and short-sighted . If anyone believes that China is sitting on their laurels they are delusional , China is spending massive amounts of money developing all kinds of super high tech jet aircraft and weapons systems . We must not allow the liberal doves to defund and strip our great military and put all of us at high risk in a hostile dangerous world . The diminishing of Tyndall A.F.B,the Navy Base, and the Coast Guard facility would be very detrimental to Bay County . I hope and pray that Congress will find other means to save money than to rush to weaken our national defense in a time of extreme peril in our world .

Having a strong dominant military is like having insurance not important until an event happens then you`re mighty happy you have it . To be weak militarily is foolish and possibly suicidal . China and Russia are rapidly building up their military power and with the continuing threat of organized terrorism this is not the time to weaken our military. There are plenty of ways to save money and reduce spending without diminishing our ability to defend ourselves and to deter aggression by other nations .KEEP OUR MILITARY THE STRONGEST IN THE WORLD !!!!

So, what happens if we get a Cat 5 hurricane bearing down on KPAM? Hope they will "get a waiver" to save our tax dollars on the ramp.
