Okaloosa county officials can confirm that the victim was 29-year-old Tabitha Tidwell.
Fire officials received a call from other apartment residents saying they could smell smoke but they weren't sure where it was coming from.
When authorities arrived on scene they had a difficult time trying to locate the fire.
When they did, they said Tidwell was in cardiac arrest, and they immediately took her to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center where she died.
One neighbor who lives across the street says she saw everything.
"I did here sirens going off but I didn't pay much attention at first,” said Marelyn Slothower. “Then when I walked outside I saw a fire engine parallel to the highway and an emergency parked in the other driveway."
Officials say they believe the fire started in the kitchen.
At this point the investigation is ongoing and no official cause has been determined.
