Fire hit the Bay County Waste to Energy facility (the incinerator) tonight.

The first alarm was sounded around 7:00 PM and a number of Bay County fire units responded. Around 8:30 PM fire command called for assistance from the Panama City Fire Department’s tower ladder truck which was rushed to the scene.

Fire fighters are also looking into using some heavy construction equipment to punch a hole in an outside wall to give fire crews access to the blaze.

County crews at the water plant were contacted to keep the water pressure up for the fire crews.

It’s not the first time fire has been a problem for the incinerator. Back in 2008 two fires within a 3-month period caused enough severe damage that the incinerator was heavily damaged, closed and rebuilt.

Bay County Paramedics are on stand-by at the site. Its expected the firefighters will be battling the blaze for at least several more hours.

There’s no word what started the fire. It was declared under control at 9:45 PM
