FLORALA, Ala. The hospital in the south Alabama town of Florala has closed.
Employees of Florala Memorial Hospital said they were told Friday afternoon that the hospital would be closing immediately and they were instructed to transfer the patients. Signs were posted on the hospital Friday night saying, "Closed. Please call 911."
The 28-bed hospital opened in 1964. It was acquired by Hospital Holdings of Knoxville, Tenn., in 2010. At the time, a company official said the hospital was averaging about three patients a day and needed to average 13 to be financially sound.
Town officials met Sunday to discuss options for health care in the Covington County town of 2,000. Hospitals operate nearby in Andalusia
