Panama City, FL---Family and friends of the extended Bay High School football family are remembering the life and accomplishments of one John L. Cobb.
Especially for the folks who've been in this area for more than 35 years, that certainly is a recognizable name! Coach Cobb is the man who coached Bay to the 1976 State football championship, the only football state title of any Bay County school!
Coach Cobb passed away late Sunday night up in Knoxville where his daughter lived. He was 84.
Raised in Blountstown he moved to Panama City as a young man, excelled in athletics at Bay, went on to Memphis State.
He served in the Air Force in Korea, then went back to Memphis and got into coaching.
That led him back to Bay in 1973, where a few years later, he guided a group of 44 players to the '76 state championship!
Cobb later went into school administration before retiring in 1990. The video attached to this story is from 5 years ago when Bay held the ceremony to name it's new gym after coach Cobb.
Jim Holsombake was a center on the 76 team who went on to play at LSU and is now a successful local businessman.
"I don't believe any young man came into contact with coach Cobb that his life wasn't made better and that he wasn't influenced by coach Cobb. He was a man that I'm not ashamed to say that I loved, and I really feel like he loved me just like he loved every young man that played for him. The thing that I remember most about coach Cobb he really didn't do a lot of screaming and yelling, he just inspired you to want to please him. That was the motivation that most of the players took on, we did not want to let coach Cobb down. He believed in us and we wanted to be able to justify that belief in us."
Funeral services will be Thursday at Wilson Funeral Home in Panama City. The family will receive friends from 6-8 and the funeral service will start at 8.
