Former Teacher Avoids Trial in Student Paddling Case

PONCE DE LEON, Fla A former Holmes County teacher will not go to trial for paddling a 5 year old.

Ryan Leavins resigned his teaching position at Ponce de Leon elementary school after being arrested for felony child abuse in mid-October.

He had allegedly paddled a 5 year old E-S-E student several times for disrupting the class. The paddlings left marks on the child.

Leavins was to be tried this spring, but that won't happen. Late last week the state agreed to defer the prosecution, and place him in pre-trial intervention.

This means if he follows all the program requirements, and stays out of trouble for the next year, the charge will disappear.

Leavins will also pay $2,000 in assessments.
