Florida Governor Rick Scott trails former Governor Charlie Crist in the latest Quinnipiac University poll.
The poll shows Republican-turned independent-turned Democrat Charlie Crist leading Republican Rick Scott by seven points.
The likely matchup is closer now than in June when Crist held a 10 point lead.
Quinnipiac University pollster Peter Brown says negative campaigning will likely decide the winner.
“One assumes you can’t spend 100 million dollars or 55 million dollars or whatever it is on television ads and not have a negative race,” said Brown.
U.S. Senator Bill Nelson was not included in the latest poll.
Nelson has left open the option of running if Crist falters.
