Gulf Coast State College Holds Dental Kidz Klinic

PANAMA CITY -- This month is Dental Health Month.

Gulf Coast State College's dental clinic provided free dental exams today to kids. The clinic will see about 120 kids this week.
Monday was Nicholas doll's first time in a dentist's chair.

Dental Patient Nicholas Doll said, "I don't even know that the dentist is but I think it's gonna be fun.”

Nicholas is one of dozens of local children who will receive a free dental exam this week at Gulf Coast State College.
It's all part of Gulf Coast's Kidz Klinic.

The Student American Dental Hygienist Association or SADHA sponsors the annual event.

Caitlin Shuler, SADHA Student said, "It's important for kids to learn about their good oral hygiene because its important, it's a habit that they'll learn…do throughout their entire life, once you start at an early age it’s easy to keep that habit going."

Community donations include: t-shirts, toothbrushes and toothpaste. After their check-up is complete, kids get to pick out a toy. SADHA staff tries to make the kids' dental visit as fun as possible.
That encourages kids like Nicholas to return to the dentist chair in the future.

"It’s really fun because they get to check your teeth and see if they're OK,” said Doll.

The college is running the Kidz Clinic through Thursday. Unfortunately all of this year's appointments are taken.
