Holiday Shopping Safety

After a string of car burglaries in South Walton County, the sheriff's office wants to remind shoppers and residents what to do so they don’t invite thieves.

"Over the weekend, on the 18th and 19th we had a rash of auto burglaries in this area" said Walton County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Wendy Ammons.

Some of the cars broken into in the Montigo, North Andelusia and Santa Clara areas were unlocked. Others had their windows down. And some had valuable items on the seat. Wendy Ammons says as of their latest count there have been 17 cars broken into on streets like Montigo Avenue. She says however there may be more break-ins unaccounted for from residents who have been out of town.

"Well if you've been out of town and you live in the area and you see that your vehicle has been broken into even if there's no items that have been taken, contact the sheriff's office we can take a report that way we're able to track the activity that has occurred in the area and hopefully that will lead to the capture of these criminals" said Wendy Ammons.

Ammons says this is a good reminder for Black Friday shoppers.

"Make sure that your vehicle is locked, I know that may sound silly but there are people who for some reason still leave their vehicle unlocked" said Ammons.

Ammons also suggests placing any purchases in the trunk of the car instead of the back seat.
When home, take them inside. Wendy Ammons says if you have a garage, use it. If you park in the driveway or on the street, install motion sensor lighting. Burglars prefer to work in the dark
and if you have a car alarm, make sure you set it.
