Hurlburt Field Makes Preparations for Tropical Storm Karen

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. Base officials initiated Hurricane Condition 3 at 9:00 a.m. today to prepare for the possible arrival of Tropical Storm Karen. Although the storm is not expected to be devasting, Hurlburt Field anticipates experiencing effects from the storm, to include high winds, rainfall and storm surge.

As a safety precaution, the base is preparing aircraft to be evacuated to designated safe zones at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark and Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. Ground operations will continue until it is determined unsafe to do so by the wing commander.

At this time a mandatory evacuation of base personnel is not anticipated. Hurlburt Field members and their families who decide to voluntarily evacuate the local area will not be reimbursed travel costs. Only when mandatory evacuation protocol is initiated, will costs be reimbursed.

All military and Department of Defense civilian members assigned to Hurlburt Field are advised to stay in contact with their Unit Control Centers and to monitor local radio and television weather reports.
In addition, Hurlburt Field personnel should take precautionary measures such as, boarding up windows, bringing in loose items from outside, stocking bottles of water and fueling vehicles, as appropriate.
