Inmate Beating Leads to an Additional 10 Year Sentence

MARIANNA-- A prison inmate is getting another 10 years tacked onto his current sentence.

United States District Judge Richard Smoak sentenced 53 year old Daniel Victor Smith Wednesday to 10 years in federal prison for aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Smith stuffed a padlock into a tube-sock and beat another inmate in the head with it. The attack happened while Smith was serving time at the state prison in Marianna.

The other inmate suffered a brain hemorrhage. Smith is currently serving a 16 and a half years for second degree murder in a 2002 stabbing.

Authorities said Smith claims to be a member of a prominent prison gang.
