PANAMA CITY - Insurance companies are sending out letters to thousands of people telling them to use "preferred pharmacies" for their prescriptions.
Owner Lu Jones of Coopers Drugs in Panama City says her customers started receiving the letters in November. She says the move is hurting local pharmacies because insurance companies are urging people to get their prescriptions filled at larger pharmacies.
"We've lost people that we don't even realize that have gone and you know we think 'I wonder where they are.' what's happened is they've gone without even calling us. So yes, it's affecting all of these local smaller drug stores," said Jones.
Jones says the letters indicate the "preferred pharmacies" will have better prices, but she says that's not necessarily the case.
