Investigators Release More Details In Teacher's Suicide

Jackson County Sheriff's investigators say they now have a motive in the suicide of a popular Marianna High School teacher.

On February 14, a fellow teacher called the Department of Children and Families Child Abuse hotline, accusing 61 year old John Summers of having inappropriate contact with students.

Summers taught American History, Latin and sponsored the school's year book.

On February 15, DCF and Sheriff's officials began their investigation of the claims. The next day, Summers committed suicide in his home.

While searching his home, investigators found a key to a locked cabinet in Summers’ classroom. Inside they found a black duffel bag with compact discs, containing pictures of yearbook pictures as well as adult pornography and suspected child pornography featuring males performing explicit sexual acts.

Had he not died, authorities say Summers would have faced criminal felony charges.
