Jackson Co. Organization Hosts Fundraiser for Family

JACKSON COUNTY - A Jackson County service club is teaming up with some local businesses to help a child with health issues. The Optimist Club has organized a fundraiser for Molli Redmon who suffers from Spina Bifida.

Like most girls her age, 11-year old Molli Redmon enjoys volleyball.
Molli suffers from Spina Bifida which affects, among other things, her ability to walk. She doesn't let that get in her way.

"I'm independent,” she explains. “I run. I'm not supposed to run because of my left knee. I have arthritis in my left knee and it keeps me from running."

Molli need regular medical treatment. Her family struggles with the bills.

"It’s kinda costly sometimes because there are two different procedures that Molli has to do on a daily basis. So it can get kinda costly," said her mother, Maryellen Varnum.

So the Optimist Club of Jackson County came up with a fundraiser to help. It's called "Dine Out for Kids."

"This event 'dine out for kids' week was conceived by our members because we wanted to help an area family that had a child who's suffering from a childhood disease," explained Chairperson Kay Dennis.

“Dine Out for Kids” features different restaurant each day. A portion of their sales will go toward the Optimist Club.

The event kicked-off Wednesday. Thursday stop was the Wharf Express. Molli said she was nervous, but happy.

"It makes me feel really good that people know what I've been through and they understand," she said.
