Lightning Kills One, Injured Another on Shell Island

Monday's severe weather in Bay County has proven deadly. Shortly before noon Monday, a father and his son were struck by lightning on Shell Island.

42-year old James Keith Brown of Chelsea, Alabama and his 14-year old stepson, Tristan Berger, were on the Gulf side of Shell Island when the storm blew in.

Shortly before noon Monday, local authorities received the call they'd been hit by lightning. Crews from the Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and paramedics immediately headed to the scene.

However, the continued threat of lightning forced them to turn back. It took almost an hour before they could safely get to the father and son. Once paramedics arrived, they say James Keith Brown was dead at the scene.

They rushed Berger back to shore at the Panama City Marina where he was rushed to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. At last word, Tristan Berger was still in critical condition.
