For the Glenwood Bulldogs cheerleaders, competing at regionals earlier this month was a dream come true. The group of 3 squads made their way to Ocala, FL with the hopes of having a great experience. They left with trophies and the opportunity to compete in their conference's national competition, an honor they may not be able to take part in.
According to cheer coordinator Alesia Rhodes, the majority of the young ladies on the team don't have the finances readily available to make the trip which costs $7,000 in total. Participants in the program range in age from 5 to 15, Rhodes says all girls are required to maintain a 2.0 GPA, but many have exceeded that expectation, carrying a 3.0.
Cheer coach Erica Bryant says that one of the best parts of the program is seeing the girls grow, noting that the group isn't as much about cheerleading as it is about helping the young ladies grow into successful women.
