PANAMA CITY - A number of needy families have a little more food in the cupboard because of a local church.

The Messiah Lutheran Church on Highway 390 has been collecting food for the needy.

Thursday, church members handed-out the collections, more than 5000 pounds of fresh produce, meat and non-perishable food.

They invited anyone who needed food to drop by and take some of the items.

All they had to do was show and ID.

Organizers say they're just trying to give back to those in-need, especially when the demand is high during the holiday season.

"We can't resolve the world's problems. Things are tight. The economy is tough and we just want to give back and this is the quickest and direct way we can provide that assistance," said church member Teresa Zar.

If you'd like to help out, you have another chance next week.

We here at NewsChannel 7 and our media partners at Clearchannel Radio will be collecting food during our annual harvest food drive.

The event takes place next Friday, from 6am - 6pm at the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Highway 77 in Lynn Haven.

You can drop off any non-perishable food items, or make a cash donation and we'll buy the food for you.

Everything we collect will go to the Salvation Army's food pantry which is extremely low right now, and the Panama City Rescue Mission for it' annual Thanksgiving Day Feast.
