The Bay County Islamic Society and the Islamic Understanding Institute invited the community to a free domestic violence prevention seminar at Gulf Coast State College all day Saturday.

The program opened with remarks from Representative Jimmy Patronis and Panama City Commissioner John Kady and then included a long list of keynote speakers.

Shayma Salman has worked as a licensed clinical social worker in Panama City for 15 years and considers the problem an epidemic.

"We talked about the prevalence of domestic violence, the problem. We're talking about solutions and how to spark interest in preventing this issue, specifically in Panama City," said Salman.

Salman believes the number one way to prevent domestic violence is to educate the public through events like today's seminar.

Any kind of counciling in prevention is a good thing.Times are hard, it doesn't help anything by getting into a violent rage with your wife, husband or other family members. Getting into fights gets out of hand and usually ends with some one stabbing or shooting some one.Any kind of help anyone can offer in preventing domestic violence is a really good thing.

The ones with extreme "Islamic viewpoints" are not following Islam. Those viewpoints are cultural, but they claim it's the religion, then make the entire Muslim popluation look bad. Very nice to see a group get involved in the family unit.

Given the amount of domestic violence in families with extremist Islamic viewpoints, such as "honor killings", it is good that local Islamic groups are taking action. Whether the Koran teaches this violence or their local Imans do, Muslim families must take heed to prevent radicalism from infiltrating the family unit that God established.
