Lynn Haven City Commissioners voted unanimously to authorize the city's police department to place a permanent school resource officer for Bay Haven Charter Academy
Temporary officers were placed in the school after the last month's school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
Dr. Tim Kitts, the CEO of Bay Haven, called placing a resource officer in the school full time a top priority, and the city agreed to help out.
"They'd come to us and asked if we'd take a look at it,” said Mayor Walter Kelley. “Because of some of the things that have been going on around the states.”
Mayor Kelley said the school resource officer will cost $22,000 per year.
"We certainly want to be prepared here and protect our children before it's too late," said Kelley.
Kitts added that having the officer will help give parents a sense of relief when they drop their children off at school.
The officer will be placed in the main building on Hawks Landing Boulevard.
