A man is dead after being shot at local nightclub Monday morning. It happened around 2 a.m.

Sheriff Lou Roberts says they're still questioning witnesses as they narrow down persons of interest.

"I was just saying to myself, 'Whoever did that, that was very dirty to do that to my friend' and he was a very nice person," Arthur Pittman said.

He is describing the shock after hearing his friend Calvin Lee Rhynes was gunned down at a nightclub early Monday morning along Magnolia Drive.

"Officers responded, along with EMS," Sheriff Roberts said. "They found the victim lying right near the front door of the establishment. There were several gunshots that had been fired from the what appeared to be a close distance."

Sheriff Roberts wouldn't say how many bullets hit the 36-year-old but did say he was hit in the upper torso.

"He was transported to the hospital in Dothan, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time after arriving there," Sheriff Roberts mentioned.

"It really hurt me because that really bothered me because somebody would take him out and then kill him like that. You know what I'm saying? For no reason at all," Pittman said.

"At this point, we do not see a motive," the Sheriff said. "Obviously, it was some type of argument that led to this. At that point, we don't know what, what actually provoked the incident."

Sheriff Roberts says they are close to finding a person of interest in the murder.

"It appears at this point, it's just one person responsible for the actual shooting," Sheriff Roberts said. "There were other people who were present that may have seen something or heard something."

"Whoever did it, I hope they catch him and hope they do something to him," Pittman explained. "I'm talking about put him away because that's wrong."

NewsChannel 7 reached out to the club owner but did not hear back.

Sheriff Roberts says there hasn't been any shootings at the club in a few years. If you have any information on this incident, contact the Jackson County Sheriff's Office at 482-9664.
