A German woman, accused of drowning her grandson in a bathtub at St. George Island in Franklin County 2-years ago, will go on trial for first degree murder.
Prosecutors and attorney for 73-year-old Marianne Bordt met with Circuit Judge Angela Dempsey Friday to discuss a possible plea deal. But the attorneys told Judge Dempsey they were not able to settle the case. So Dempsey scheduled jury selection to begin on October 24th.
Bordt drowned her 5-year old grandson, Camden Hiers, in a bathtub while they were vacationing on St. George Island.
The boy's parents were going through a divorce, and Bordt allegedly told investigators she didn't want the child growing up in a broken home.
Bordt's lawyers admit she committed the killing, but plan to use an insanity defense.
They say she suffers mental problems stemming from a childhood head injury Bordt suffered during a Russian bombing attack on her hometown during World War Two.
The state is seeking the death penalty if Bordt is convicted.
