PANAMA CITY - She's sometimes known as the wizard of parent portal, but now Sandi Hawks has a second title, Support Employee Of The Year.
School officials awarded Hawks the honor Thursday night, as she caps a 30 year career with the school district.
Sandy Hawks is an administrative assistant in Bay District Schools' Information Services Department.
She's known as the go to person for the district's Parent Portal computer program. The site allows parents access to their child's grades, attendance record, and school announcements.
"When we started this program, it was just kind of learn as you go and it just kind of fell in my lap. But it's been pretty easy to do it," said Hawks.
Hawks says her main responsibility is helping parents and school officials with any technical difficulties. This year she added some of the online school registration program to her responsibilities.
"Pretty hectic at first. A lot of parents didn't understand why we were doing it and a lot of parents thinking that they were no longer going to be notified any other way, but it went pretty smooth. A lot smoother than I thought it was going to," said Hawks.
School district officials recognized Hawks' tireless work Thursday night naming her the "Support Personnel Person Of The Year."
"She's the front line of any computer or technology glitches and so she knows how to handle it and has such a great disposition and we depend on her greatly as we did with the Parent Portal," said Superintendent Bill Husfelt.
Hawks says she's still surprised by the honor.
"My first thought was that was a mistake, but just such an honor especially with this being my last year with the district," said Hawks.
Hawks plans to retire from the school district in December, to travel and spend time with her grandkids.
