Massachusetts- The death toll from an outbreak of a rare fungal meningitis continues to climb.

The Centers for Disease Control announced Saturday that 15 people have died and 197 others have been infected. The outbreak covers 13 states.

Federal investigators have linked it to steroid shots for back pain. The shots were made at the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts.

Health officials said 14,000 people may have received the shots. It can take four to five weeks for symptoms to appear. Fungal meningitis is not contagious and cannot be passed from person to person.
