First, and easiest, make sure the value of your home insurance is current--relative to the actual value of your home. Secondly, you will want to document all your belongings. Tina Blackwell Romaine, of Blackwell Insurance in Panama City says to make a detailed list of the contents of your home, along with pictures and videos of the interior and exterior of the house.

Last, but not least, purchase that flood insurance right now! She says that 30-40 percent of losses that occur for homeowners are for flooding that occurs in a non-designated flood area. She wants to also remind everybody that flood insurance is a separate policy from your homeowner's insurance!

Hopefully these three easy steps will get you on the right track to navigating an insurance claim, should you have one this year.
