Panama City- It's been a while since we've seen protestors taking to the streets throughout the country, including Panama City, to demand change as a part of the "Occupy" Movement. But even though camping out and picket signs appear to be a thing of the past for the most part, the movement, at least locally, is still going strong.
"The general approach, the general attitude that's growing out of Occupy is to find solutions rather than just dissent," said Occupy Panama City Organizer Steve Imhof.
With that same bottom line in mind, Occupy Panama City organizers held a workshop Sunday at Unity of Panama City called "Birthing the New Economy."
"We feel that business has too much corporate powers and money. People have too much influence on our politics," said O.P.C. member Robert Gilmore.
Around two dozen people showed up to the meeting where they were greeted by a graphic showing the nation's ever-growing debt. It's something Gilmore said will only get worse unless change happens sooner rather than later.
"If it keeps up like this I think that there is going to be more uprisings like there was back in the 20s and 30s," said Gilmore.
The solution O.P.C. offerered Sunday is what they called "conscious capitalism."
"The goal is making a living, making money, and making wealth, but you have more than a single bottom line," said Imhof.
Imhof went on to say conscious capitalism focuses on people, planet, and profits and he said he's confident it's what the U.S. economy needs to turn around. But even if that's true, could one group's efforts really creat nationwide change? Imhof said it has to start somewhere.
"We feel like it's better to look at the future with a positive attitude and do something about it rather than wring our hands and wait for things to happen," said Imhof.
