Governor Rick Scott Suspends Commissioner James Campbell

Update (2:45pm): Governor Rick Scott has suspended Commissioner James Campbell after he was arrested Monday morning.

Chairman Don Amunds released this statement: “Okaloosa County has received an Executive Order from Governor Scott suspending Commissioner James Campbell. Additionally according to Florida Statute, Governor Scott would re-appoint a commissioner to serve out the remaining term of the commissioner, which ends in mid-November. We are of course, saddened by this news and will have to see what the investigation or burden of proof reveals.”

Okaloosa County Commissioner James Campbell has been arrested on charges of official misconduct and four counts of perjury.

Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement made the arrest arpund 10:15 Monday morning.

The official misconduct charge is a third degree felony. The perjury charges are first degree misdemeanors.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the investigation began in May, after receiving information that Campbell was being paid to recruit sponsors for a local festival and then not disclosing that income on State of Florida Commission on Ethics forms.

Florida State Statutes require elected officials to annually report any sources of income in excess of $1,000 to the Florida Commission of Ethics. Campbell is alleged to have falsified his income on his reports.

The four month long investigation was conducted by the FDLE and the Office of the State Attorney at the request of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Campbell was Okaloosa County.

We do not know if he has posted bail. This story is still developing.
