The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is offering a new service to the public by distributing safety information, alerts, and advisories as it happens by way of a text message or email in alert.

The information is sent out in a matter of seconds and it's free and easy to sign up. You can register at Nixle.com to receive important safety information as it's happening in the community. The service is providing another way for safety officials to stay connected with the people they serve.

"It's something you're going to want to pay attention to because it's going to deal with say a major road closure, an active shooter incident, a missing child, or something very significant from a public safety stand point" said Michele Nicholson, Public Information Officer for the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

6,000 law enforcement agencies across the U.S. are using the alert system. If you are interested in signing up for the free service, log on to nixle.com and choose the method in which you would like to receive those alerts.
