Phase One of Norriego Point Project Wrapping Up

Phase one of the Norriego Point Stabilization project in Destin is coming to an end.

For the past few days, crews have been dredging the Coast Guard Channel.

Today they began dredging at the Old Pass Lagoon Channel, moving sand from the channel to the
t-groin.

The work that has been going on during phase one of the project is just the stepping stone to secure the point and transform it into a better recreational area for residents and tourists.

"The large amount of rain we have received the past 30 days has definitely delayed the project some. The dredge that was here as part of the Army Corps of Engineers project that we are using had to leave and do some emergency work because of flooding, but it has come back it finished the Coast Guard Channel and now it is in the process of taking care of the Old Pass Lagoon Channel,” said Doug Rainer, Public Information Officer for the City of Destin.

Destin City officials hope phase one will be complete a few weeks before the Fourth of July weekend.

Phase two will begin sometime in early 2015.
