Physicians Strut Their Stuff in Bras

Some of the male staff members at Gulf Coast Medical Center did their part Thursday afternoon to raise awareness of breast cancer - they participated in a bra fashion show.

The event has doubled in size since it began last year and had plenty of surprises for those in attendance.

34 models participated in the event held in the cafeteria of the medical facility.

"Physicians, administrators, you know our associates, nurses, technicians just an array of different people at Gulf Coast that really wanted to do something about cancer care," said Carlton Ulmer, Gulf Coast Medical Center CEO and President. "What's unique is then the bras that we're wearing go to a silent auction and people bid on them."

The one-of-a-kind bras were designed by employees at the hospital and all money raised goes to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

"Last year we raised over $1,200," said event organizer Kay Hankins, RN. "This year we hope to go over that to exceed that amount."

But even in all the fun, the models understood the underlying message was one of raising awareness on being proactive in the fight against breast cancer.

"I'm hoping the word will get out and people will show up and that's the whole purpose is to get people in here so they can get the information they need to know about breast cancer and we can raise some money for this," said Michael Taylor, MD, Chief of Staff at Gulf Coast Medical Center. "Breast cancer awareness is important and anything that I can do to help that cause I'm all for and this is a fun way to do it."

The bras will be on display all day tomorrow in the cafeteria of Gulf Coast Medical Center for the silent auction.
