Panama City - Panama City Beach commissioners are trying to put a stop to people using trash cans as toilets at the Russell-Fields City Pier.

Beach City Council members approved the purchase and installation of five video security cameras on the pier. There are no restrooms at the end of the quarter-mile long structure. So instead of walking back to the pier entrance, some people are relieving themselves in trash cans. The cameras will store the video in a DVR so city officials will have evidence in-case anyone vandalizes the property.

Council members also addressed an abandoned property that's become an eyesore. Neighbors say an old condo construction site is hurting their property values. It's located on Fernwood Street in Panama City Beach just west of Clara Avenue. The council considered labeling it a public nuisance and forcing the owner to do something with the property. But they decided instead to find out if the abandoned project is really the cause of decreasing property values before beginning the long and expensive legal process.

In the meantime, city officials will contact the owner about installing a more attractive fence around the property.

They dont want toilets on this pier because they dont want Fishermen on it. Its mainly for drunks and they want to keep those people moving. Back to the bars. That way they can get the entrance fee and the bars can make money too. Other than the cameras they havent spent a dime on the pier since it opened.
