SPRINGFIELD - Authorities are investigating what appears to be a case of arson at a local high school.

It happened a little before 2:30 this afternoon at Rutherford High School.

Administrators and staff had to evacuate the facility.

Someone set two fires in trash cans in a hallways on the backside of the campus.

The school resource deputy got there first, followed by Springfield Police and firefighters.

They quickly put out the fires, but it took a while to clear the smoke out of the halls.

In finding out what happened Principal Coy Pilson said, "We don't have many cameras in the indoor hallways, we have cameras on the outside hallways and one of the locations where we found a trashcan on fire. We're pretty sure we'll be able to find out what happened."

The school has turned the investigation over to the State Fire Marshal's office.
