A subleasing rental scam may be targeting foreign exchange students here for a summer work program.
In Miramar Beach, landlord and homeowner Jerry north discovered Tida Lux Burgess, the woman he leased his small townhome out to, was then allegedly subleasing it out to a dozen foreign exchange students.
The landlord said she was profiting more than double the rent payment. According to some of the tenants, Burgess urged them to tell North they were living there for free, as guests. When they didn't comply, Burgess allegedly retaliated, removing appliances and furniture from the home and taking the keys to a vehicle she rented to them for $90 dollars a week, making it difficult for the students to get to-and-from work.
North is currently in the process of trying to evict Burgess. He also says he'll allow the students to continue living in his unit for a cheaper price until they return home next month.
