GULF COUNTY-- Gulf County commissioners have proclaimed their county as a Purple Heart County.
County Veterans Services Officer Joe Paul approached commissioners with the idea several weeks ago as a way for them to show their support for military veterans.
One out of every nine Gulf County registered voters is a veteran, and more than half of the county's veteran population is under retirement age.
Officials say the proclamation lets everyone know that the county appreciates the military.
"Gulf County has always been very proud of our veterans and those that have served in our armed forces and this was a way for us to respect and to honor those that have served and sacrificed for our freedoms that we all enjoy," Lynn Lanier, Gulf County Department Administrator, said.
The military presents Purple Hearts to members of the military wounded or killed in combat.
It's the U.S. military's oldest honor.
