Red Snapper Bag Limit May Change

People looking forward to fishing for red snapper in the Gulf may be in for a rude awakening.

Thursday evening a meeting is set to take place to discuss red snapper allocation and bag limits for the 2013 season.

One of the proposed plans by the Reef Fish Committee is a 1 fish bag limit for the season, a change that would also lengthen the season to 44 days. However, locals say if that happens it will make things significantly more difficult for recreation fishermen and if put in place, while the length of the season can be changed, the bag limit cannot, which can have an effect on tourism.

"If we have made the choice in February of a 1 fish bag limit with 44 days, we'll be stuck with one fish," said Pam Anderson of Capt. Anderson's Marina. "Even though they may double the number of days in the June meeting because of the stock assessment, they will not go back and change that to two fish per person."

The meeting is scheduled for January 17th from 6 to 9 pm at the Destin Community Center on Stahlman Avenue. The meeting is open to the public.
