JACKSON COUNTY-- Some Jackson County senior citizens were given a surprise gift Monday morning.

Working with the Jackson Senior Citizens Center, the Jackson County Emergency Management Department handed out free weather radios.

Officials say they ordered more than 800 radios, but only gave out 109.

A state grant given to the county paid for the radios. The seniors were excited to have the new gadgets.

"We're suppose to keep it on at all times,” Evenlyn Henderson. “so that should be great to alert us if any bad weather is coming. I think its wonderful, i really do. I think they do a lot for the elderly."

As of now, only residents 60 and older are eligible for the free radio.
