Rodeo Teaches Kids How to Fish

PANAMA CITY BEACH - Kids under the age of sixteen are taking advantage of a free fishing rodeo this weekend.

The fishing rodeo started at 9 A.M. and gave kids the opportunity to learn how to fish. Families joined the city of Panama City Beach and the Parks and Recreation Department and Optimist Club of the Beaches for the event.

Organizers say the event is especially important here in the Panhandle where fishing is such a popular pastime.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife also came out to help promote responsible fishing practices.

"To really just instill conservation values and fishing values and hunting and just to get kids outside because so many kids are stuck inside," said Nicole Kierl of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

"This event is to put a fishing pole in every kids hand and teach them how to fish and teach them responsible angling practices," said Melissa Deese, the event organizer.

Fishing rods and reels from the Fish Florida Foundation were given to participants.
