Former Florida House Speaker Wants Legal Fees Paid

By  |

DESTIN - Attorneys for disgraced former House Speaker Ray Sansom of Destin were back in court trying to get the state to pay nearly $1 million in legal fees.

Sansom's attorneys argued before a judge Wednesday that the state was required to pick up the tab because it did not successfully prosecute the Destin Republican. The office of Attorney General Pam Bondi is fighting the request.

Sansom was charged over earmarking $6 million in the state budget for a Northwest Florida State College facility that was allegedly going to be used by a friend and political supporter as a hangar at the Destin Airport.

But prosecutors dropped the charges after a judge refused to let a key witness testify.

Initially prosecutors said Sansom would help reimburse design work done for the facility. But Sansom's attorney said he never agreed to pay anything.
