School Board Members Considering New Start Times for District

BAY COUNTY - School board members are also considering a proposal to change the start times for all schools to alleviate transportation issues. Apparently students are constantly tardy for classes in the morning because their buses are running late.

So transportation officials are recommending the board move elementary school start times 5 minutes earlier, from 7:50 to 7:45. The school day would end at 2:00.

They're recommending middle and high schools start 15 minutes later.

Middle schools would start at 9:00 instead of 8:45. They'd get out of school at 3:30.

High school classes would now begin at 8:30 instead of 8:15 and would end at 3:00.

"We're having a tough time now getting the students to school, get them there for breakfast because there's not enough time in between routes, so that will help us do that," said Bob Downin, Director of Transportation for Bay District Schools.

"We have tried to do it this way this year and we're just having way too many problems. We'd have to put an inordinate amount of time into hiring more bus drivers and buy more buses than we can afford," said Bill Husfelt, Bay District Schools Superintendent.

Board members will also decide that issue on April 22nd.
