New Details in Search for Missing Boater

Choctawhatchee Bay- New details emerged Tuesday in the continuing search for a missing boater in Walton County.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Spokesman Stan Kirkland says Tyler Carpenter, 18 years old, had tried to call 911 with his iPhone at the time of yesterday morning's boating accident in Choctawhatchee Bay.

He said the call was dropped and deputies apparently didn't spot anything near the Clyde B. Wells Bridge. But just an hour later, a passing driver spotted the teen. Carpenter survived and is now recovering at Sacred Heart at Santa Rosa.

His uncle, Robert Gregory, 41 years old, was still missing Tuesday. Kirkland told NewsChannel 7 Tuesday's poor weather made it difficult on search and recovery efforts.

"It's been pretty cold on the water. There's been two to two and a half foot waves. There's white caps all over the bay," said Kirkland.

Investigators said the same rough surf Tuesday may have contributed to the boat capsizing in the first place. Conditions are expected to improve Wednesday.
