One Hurt in Edgewater Beach Resort Shooting

PANAMA CITY BEACH- "I was on the ninth story and I heard somebody above me and they were like hit the floor, get on the ground, get your face down,” said Winston Cowart, Edgewater Beach Resort Guest.

Guests at Edgewater Beach Resort on Front Beach Road were scared and shocked after hearing shots go off Friday night.

“Our buddy was walking down the stairs and he was walking down and he saw cops running up with guns drawn,” said Jackson Linkous, Edgewater Beach Resort Guest.

Panama city beach police arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m. and went up to tower one to room 110.

Officers arrested Darius Dion Simmons.

Authorities say he went to the room looking for family members, but entered the wrong room.

Police say the occupants tried to explain to Simmons that he had the wrong room before Simmons began arguing with them.

The occupants told Simmons to leave the area and he did.

But less than five minutes later, he was back.

“Went to the victim's room, became involved in a verbal argument which led to a physical altercation in which time the suspect used a fire arm and struck the victim over the head,” said Robert Clarkson, Panama City Beach Police Captain.

Simmons fled, but officers were able to catch him and arrest him.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and Simmons was taken to Bay County Jail.

"We believe there was more than one suspect involved, but there was only one victim."

Some guests at the Edgewater Beach Resort say they never saw this coming.

“I think its just crazy that all this happened on spring break. I mean we all come down here to have fun and something like this happens, it’s just a tragedy,” said Cody Davies, Edgewater Beach Resort Guest.

Darius Dion Simmons is facing multiple charges, including carrying a concealed firearm, aggravated battery and use of a firearm while committing a felony. He's waiting for his first appearance in the Bay County Jail.
