SOPCHOPPY, fL. A small northwest Florida town in Wakulla County, best known for its annual Worm Grunting Festival is now the subject of a state investigation.
The state is looking into allegations the white city clerk tried to suppress the black vote in an election.
In the balloting in question, the black mayor lost by one vote and a black city commissioner was also ousted.
Both losing candidates and three black voters filed complaints now being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that City Clerk Jackie Lawhon made it more difficult for black residents to vote.
The candidates also allege that Lawhon was actively campaigning for the three white candidates on the ballot.
