Spring Break Bust Garners National Attention

WJHG’s story on the arrest of 32 spring breakers by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office is making national headlines.

As we first reported Monday night, the bust happened at a million dollar home in Miramar Beach. Seventeen college age men and 15 college age women were arrested for underage drinking. They’re also blamed for major damage to the home.

Multiple websites have since picked up the story, helping generate the more than 29,000 page views on WJHG.com.

ESPNU’s UNITE, which discusses sports and pop culture through the lens of social media, aired a clip of the story on Wednesday night’s show. But two of the show’s hosts, former FSU quarterback Danny Kanell and Reese Waters, incorrectly identified the location of the party as Alabama and the suspects as Alabama students.

UNITE's confusion appears to stem from a response one of the students gave WJHG’s Bryan Anderson. When Bryan asked “You think it’s funny to be arrested?,” one of them replied “It’s hilarious. Roll tide.”

They may have been Alabama fans, but they were most likely not University of Alabama students. We checked. The Crimson Tide’s Spring Break begins March 22.
