Spring Breakers Leave Behind Tons of Trash

By  |

Panama City Beach-- It happens every year during Spring Break, increased litter on the beach.

A combination of concerned locals, police and a contracted cleaning company work around the clock picking up after the spring breakers.

The Tourist Development Council uses about half-a-million dollars in bed tax money to hire Coastal Parasail to perform the beach maintenance. Four tractors groom the beach every night and every morning. Two crews start at the east and another 2 crews at the west end and they work towards each other. Each Spring Break season, they collect about 200 tons of trash.

"The beach is our number one asset so it is the most important thing to make sure that our beach stays pristine 365 days a year," said Andy Phillips, a Bay County Tourist Development Council Board Member.

Panama City Beach Police Chief, Drew Whitman, says another problem has been glass on the beach. Alcohol is allowed, but no glass is permitted on the beach and you can be given a misdemeanor charge for violating that ordinance.
