Springfield Residents To See Rate Hikes Next Month

Springfield City Commissioners have voted to raise sewer and water rates to city customers beginning next month.

The water rates will be going up by an average of 15%.

Sewer rates will go up 20%, but you'll pay only for what you use.

Senior citizens on social security will receive a 15% discount but they must apply for it, or they'll pay the same higher rates as everyone else.

Commissioners say they have no choice but to raise the rates.

They say the city's costs have been going up for years but previous commissions refused to pass along those increase to customers, to the point the city is losing money providing the services and these increase won't be the last.

Most residents who attended said they understand the reasons but not everyone is happy about it.

Commissioners passed the rate hikes Wednesday.

They'll go into effect November 1st.
