Storage Shed Stash of Body Parts

Posted: Sat 6:38 PM, Sep 08, 2012

Authorities in Pensacola arrested former Bay County Associate Medical Examiner Michael Berkland Friday, charging him with improper disposal or storage of hazardous waste and public nuisance.

State Attorney investigators say Berkland was storing human organs and body parts in a Pensacola storage shed. They believe the remains are from autopsies performed in funeral homes in Panama City and others parts of the Panhandle.

The organs were in Tupperware containers, plastic bags and even a Styrofoam cup.

Berkland apparently stopped paying rent on the shed and the owner auctioned off the contents.
The winning bidder discovered the body parts.

Berkland was hired as an associate medical examiner in 1997, but was fired in 2003 for failing to complete more than 100 autopsy reports.
