PANAMA CITY BEACH-- Groups of students were seen hanging out on the beach Monday, but they didn't have to play hooky to be there.
This weeks marks Surfside Middle Schools 20th annual Wet Week.
All week long students spent Monday morning as biologists searching the Gulf Coast for life.
According to Glenn Faust, while both students and parents are familiar with area beaches, few understand how diverse the ecosystem is right along the coast.
"Having the ability to come down here and actually use the equipment and see what marine biologists do in the field. Collecting the organisms and being able to put their senses on it where they can touch, see and feel, it means the world," Faust said.
Wet week students use the coast to focus on everything from biology to chemistry.
