Panama City - Members of the Bay County Transportation Planning Organization heard an update Wednesday afternoon on the Hathaway Bridge construction.
A representative with the Florida Department of Transportation told members of the TPO repairing the joint on the bridge was going smoother than originally planned. Since the work had begun two weeks ago they've been working around the clock, to remove several tons of concrete.
Monday they begin adding replacement concrete. Experts are still trying to find out why some of the bridge-joints failed, causing some of the concrete decks to crumble. The work required crews to close the westbound span, forcing drivers to share the eastbound lanes, but officials say the detour hasn't caused many delays or any accidents related to the construction.
"There is no concern on safety and I think their on top of the whole situation and I think their doing a good job," said Bill Dozier, Bay County Commissioner.
If the weather holds up, the bridge work should remain on schedule. Officials say they will have the bridge re-opened by the beginning of March, before spring break.

The article did not ask for the opinion of the public. I'm sure they have plenty of engineers to do that. I'm glad it was discovered and is being fixed.
Not just that, but the sections poured when it was below freezing, people adding too much water to the mix and the shakers going out every couple of days. Im surprised that some of them have lasted this long. Add in all the tools dropped in and cell phones and it was almost funny. The running joke was duct tape and silicone was all that was holding it together. Good job Granite.
Why do they say they are working "around the clock" or 24 hrs when every time I drive over the bridge after 9:30pm there is no one even there much less working??
