Tag Fees

State Lawmakers took the first step this week to lower what you pay to register your car or truck.

Tag fees were raised in 2009 to combat falling state revenues, now the Senate budget chief wants to cut registration costs by twelve dollars a vehicle.

“It's important that as our budget picture improves, that we look at some of the increases that were done during the tough times. Because government has a habit of charging more during difficult times and then never going back and undoing some of those increases,” said Sen. Joe Negron.

If it happens at all, motorists would see lower tag fees in July.

The twelve dollars is about half of the 2009 increase.

The cost to the state: 240 million dollars.
